Hello!

Aleesha here. I’m a design and culture writer and ex-magazine editor. I came to journalism unconventionally (although unsurprisingly), having first studied and practised as an interior designer.

I’ve always been an insatiable reader, a deep listener and easily hooked on a good story (or tidbit of gossip). Those who know me get used to regular, random links to essays or news pieces from some of the most random topics – astrophysics, algorithms, architectural history, personal memoir – I truly love reading all sorts of things.

I started A Design Perspective after leaving my dream job as a magazine editor and wanting somewhere to share my meandering thoughts, ideas and experiences. I wanted a space outside of the constraints of commercial and journalistic writing where I could talk about all the design-adjacent things that influence culture and society.

The result is a fusion of the personal with the philosophical. If you sign up to receive my dispatches, you can expect them pretty sporadically. But they cover topics like the death of architecture criticism, the need for slow journalism, the hypocrisy of longevity as sustainability, how it’s not possible to be trend agnostic – mostly thought starters and hot takes with lots of links to interesting articles and podcasts.

Here’s a bit of background on me (in case it’s of interest)

My first step into architecture publishing and writing came when I landed a job in 2012 at Architectuul.com in Berlin – a kind of Wikipedia for architecture. It was here that I went deep learning about the icons of mid-20th-century design. [For the archi-nerds, it was the start of a love affair with all things Scarpa, Kahn and Japanese metabolism.]

Since then I’ve been the editor of Australian Design Review, Indesignlive and Habitus. I’ve written endlessly about architecture and design over the years, and probably always will.

I’m now a regular contributor on Est Living, and a bunch of other publications; I write copy for architects, consult on marketing and PR and am dabbling around with lots of creative projects.

Hit me up on Instagram or LinkedIn if you want to wax lyrical on anything I write about.
